Curious Worlds David Beck + The Cardboard Bernini + The Collector

"Curious Worlds" pulls back the curtain on a fantastically unique artist, David Beck, a master sculptor, carver, and miniature architect who works in a fantastical genre all his own, combining "the meticulous craftsmanship and precision of a mechanical engineer with the sometimes wacky worldview of a Tim Burton." (John Yau, Hyperallergenic). Coming out from his formative years in New York City on the edge of destitution, David Beck is still a largely undiscovered genius, only known to a select group of collectors and curators who snap up his work as soon as it comes out. "Curious Worlds: The Art & Imagination of David Beck" is an intimate portrait of the most accomplished American artist you’ve never heard of.

"The Cardboard Bernini" examines the life and work of artist James Grashow as he spends four years building a giant cardboard fountain, with the intention of putting it outside to dissolve. Inspired by the baroque sculptor Bernini, and propelled by a crucial event documented in the film, Grashow is driven to experience the process of creation and loss by making an extraordinary artwork that will be destroyed in the end. This film follows Jimmy’s journey, as he questions life’s fragility and the artistic process.

In The Collector: Allan Stone’s Life in Art, Olympia Stone, Allan Stone’s daughter sets out to understand her father’s obsessive passion for art, while charting his unique journey through the New York art world from the 1950s onward. Woven into this tale of discovery and obsession is the story of Stone’s incomparable art collection: Olympia and her six sisters grew up among 20 foot tall paper mache sculptures, shrunken heads, Congo nail fetishes, Wayne Thiebaud paintings and Cigar-store Indians.
Throughout the film, Olympia questions whether her father’s compulsion to collect art is the outcome of a love for something pushed to its limit, or is it pathological? What causes someone to collect so obsessively? What is Allan Stone getting from art that most people don’t see?
